I found the following information to be especially helpful.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px; text-align: justify;">According to Sonya Lunder, a senior analyst at the research and advocacy organization Environmental Working Group, some fruits and vegetables absorb more pesticides than others. Shoppers who can only afford to buy some organic food should splurge on the organic version of what she calls the “dirty dozen” in produce: peaches, apples, bell peppers, celery, nectarines, strawberries, cherries, kale, lettuce, imported grapes, carrots and pears. These fruits and vegetables absorb more chemicals than others. Onions, avocados, sweet corn and pineapples are among the Environmental Working Group’s “Clean 15? fruits and vegetables, which absorb the least amount of pesticides.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">The article also discusses how there are regulations for food to be called organic, but personal care items do not have any certifications.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px; text-align: justify;">TerraChoice’s Scot Case says that consumers should be skeptical of organic claims in the areas of “kids, cosmetics and cleaners.” Unlike agriculture, these industries don’t have a standardized organic labeling system. A shampoo may have “organic” on its label because it includes a small amount of organic lavender, but it could still contain chemicals that are harsh on the skin. Case in point: Hair care company Modern Organic Products makes a “molding cream” that received a high toxicity score, according to the Environmental Working Group’s cosmetic safety database. Organic-labeled products from Africa’s Best and Organic Bath Co. also scored high in toxicity.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span id="more-374"></span>This is why I have become a compulsive label reader.  I usually walk away with nothing, because I get so disgusted with what I am reading.  There are so many conflicting opinions floating around, I have become very skeptical of everything.</p>

Most soups contain few calories because they are made with mostly vegetables. <p style="text-align: justify;">Soups are a very healthy meal choice that can help you lose weight as well. In fact, you can get all your dietary and nutritional needs from a bowl of soup. The trick is that the foods you need to eat should also be appealing to you so that it is easier for you to stick to your diet.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Of course, the most obvious foods that you need to cut down on are in the carbohydrate family, like potatoes, breads, and pastas, or snack foods like chips and cookies.  Everyone knows that eating too many of those types of food will cause you to gain weight.  But, it is difficult to give up all those yummy foods without replacing them with other food alternatives that may be just as appealing.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">One way to enable you to give up the satisfying potatoes or rice at supper time is to eat some other type of hot food that is lower in calories and carbohydrates as a replacement.  Instead of a serving of mashed potatoes, how about replacing it with mashed turnips?  A serving of 125 ml. of mashed potatoes (made with 2% milk and butter) is about 124 calories, while a serving of 125 ml. of mashed turnips is only 15 calories.  You would still get the warm, satisfying feeling of having the mashed potatoes while cutting down drastically on the calories—and mashed turnips are GOOD. Try them!</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><span id="more-261"></span>There are other hot vegetables you can have to replace potatoes or rice for a calorie reduced dinner menu.  You could have cauliflower, broccoli or even hot cooked beets.  All of these are lower in calories than potatoes or rice, but adding them to your supper plate will give you the feeling of a hot, comforting meal that a cold, crisp salad cannot provide.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">If you love spaghetti and want an alternative, instead of using pasta or spaghetti noodles, try serving the meat sauce on a bed of sautéed bean sprouts.  Simply sauté the bean sprouts with salt and pepper, plus a bit of soy sauce to soften them a bit.  When you add the sauce on top, it looks almost like spaghetti, but has a lot fewer calories.  The little bit of crunch that the bean sprouts give the dish is very nice.  Again, with this alternative you won’t feel like you are missing out on what the rest of your family may be eating.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">It is often harder to come up with alternatives for snacks and sweets that are diet friendly.  One tip is to eat popcorn instead of those calorie-laden potato chips—and instead of butter, use different spices to give the popcorn more flavor.  You can simply add a little melted margarine (only about a teaspoon is needed) stirred into the popcorn, and then experiment with different spices for flavoring.  Don’t you think adding chili powder to your popcorn sounds tasty?</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">If you have a sweet tooth, then giving up all those desserts are difficult when you are trying to lose weight.  Why not try making your desserts with sweeteners instead of real sugar to cut down on calories. It also must state how many calories, carbohydrates, amount of sodium, etc. the food contains.  You need to read these labels carefully to know what you are eating and what you are up against when purchasing packaged food.</p>

<p>1.	Did you know what it really means when the package may say the product contains 0% trans fat?  It may mean that the amount of trans fat the product contains may not really be zero.  The government controls say that anything less than .5% can be rounded down to 0%.  That is when you have to look at the serving size to know how much trans fat (or calories or whatever) you may actually be eating.  Is the serving size realistic?  In some cases it is not.  Be aware and be careful.</p>
<p>2.	You should also be aware of the suggested number of servings in the container or package and gear the amount you eat to that.  For instance, if a package of pudding says it is a 6-serving size and you eat half of the amount made, you have eaten three portions.   Because of this, you may be eating more that you think.<br />

3.	The % Daily Value (%DV) tells you whether a food is high or low in nutrients.  A food label that reads 20% Daily Value (20%DV) means the food is high in nutrients, whereas one that read 5%DV or less are low in nutrients.  Food labels can help you limit the nutrients you may need to cut back on in your diet, but they can also help you to get increase the nutrients that are important in your diet.</p>
<p>4.	Sodium on a food label simply means the salt content.  Foods that contain more than 20%DV are high is sodium.  High sodium intake is linked to high blood pressure.  You should look for foods that have low sodium (5%DV or less) or sodium-free (no sodium).</p>
<p>5.	Although some food labels may say ‘low-fat’, ‘reduced-fat’ or ‘light’, this does not always mean that the foods are low calorie.  Fat free does not mean calorie free, so be careful.  Those calories do count.</p>
<p>6.	When reading food labels, look for foods with a low %DV for total fat, saturated fat, cholesterol and sodium.</p>
<p>7.	Your DV goal is 100% for total carbohydrates, dietary fiber, vitamins and minerals.  You don’t have to get this 100% amount all from one food.  You can add up a combination of foods to get the right amount.</p>
<p>8.	The daily values indicated on food labels are listed for a person who eats 2,000 to 2,500 calories a day.  If you are eating less than that on your diet, your personal DV may be lower.</p>
<p>9.	Be aware of the grams of sugar in each package and the amount of carbohydrates.  High sugar and carbohydrate numbers mean more calories. Again, sugar-free doesn’t meat carbohydrate-free, so be sure to read the labels carefully.</p>
<p>10.	Food labels can help you weed out certain foods that may be detrimental to your diet.  But they can also serve as a guide to free foods that you can eat.  A free food would be one with fewer than 20 calories and less than 5 grams of carbohydrates per serving.  Some examples of free foods would be: diet sodas, sugar-free flavored gelatin products or sugar-free chewing gum.</p>
